As my Mom, my daughter and I were driving around the area a few weekends ago, I got a glimpse of something that I see daily but never really paid much attention to – those colored arrow signs, what used to be known as “colored belts.”
As a very young kid, I remember my grandfather saying, “We need to follow the Yellow Belt,” but never really understood, and still don’t to this day, where you will end up if you follow one of the many colored belt signs you see at many intersections.
As we continued to drive around that afternoon, I had mentioned to my Mom that if many people like me don’t understand the purpose of these signs, why do we still have them? We only drove around Washington, Canonsburg and Cecil Township that day, and we spotted over 30 of these signs. I am 39 years old, so I am in the generation where technology was limited until I was in my twenties, and I still have no idea what these signs mean.
My daughter took her driving test a few years ago, and I don’t remember anything in the reading material about these routes. So either we need a lesson on what these signs mean, or do away with them.
