Although this is not a presidential election year, voters in our area have some important choices to make. They will choose today who will be our governor, who represents us in the U.S. House of Representatives, the Pennsylvania House and Senate. Residents in Chartiers Township are also being asked whether they approve a special tax to support Chartiers-Houston Community Library.

The races for the state offices have been particularly nasty this fall, and we hope the negativity oozing from the glossy mailers and television ads does not discourage citizens from going to the polls.

We may not like the choice of candidates we have, but it is important that we exercise our right to vote. Democracy is dependent upon our participation. If we, by not voting, allow a minority of our citizens to make the decisions about who rules all of us, we have surrendered the very principle upon which this nation was formed.

Think of it this way: A choir won’t sound very good if only 30 percent of its members are singing.

Go vote, and let your voice be heard.
