I once told my daughter that the problem with our reading is that she didn’t read enough books by dead authors and I did not read enough books by those who are still living. In Alex Beam’s essay, “Long live school curriculums built around great books,” on the Observer-Reporter’s Nov. 2 commentary page, he mentioned the planned opening of a Great Books college by the C.S. Lewis Foundation has been delayed, possibly due to a fundraising issue. I am not alone in sharing a view of the need of “balanced” reading. “Great books” are great, but so are many others.
