Almost every day, I pass the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Cecil Township. Looking back, I remember reading the big announcement in the Observer-Reporter that the cemetery would be placed there, and I remember thinking what a great honor it was for Washington County.

The farmland was cleared, construction began and, before long, the gates were opened. Some days, there have been traffic delays due to funeral processions, and on other days it has been very quiet, a solemn reminder of the military service and sacrifice of the brave men and women who have served our country.

Just recently, I noticed how quickly the cemetery has been filled, so many local men and women have answered the call to service. Last Sunday, in preparation for Veteran’s Day, the roads leading into the cemetery were adorned with American flags, dozens of them waving in the autumn breeze. It was breathtaking.

The citizens of our great country are forever indebted to our veterans. And a special thank you to the staff of the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies for being the caretaker of these brave souls.
