It was expressed recently in this space that in order to secure a future for the Chartiers-Houston Community Library, we need a tiny tax levy. As a fairly new resident and a senior citizen of Chartiers Township, I was shocked to learn that my school taxes were increasing by just over 9 mills next year. I won’t rehash the reasons for this increase since they are well known.

However, to ask the community, especially those on a fixed income, to now vote in favor of an additional 2-mill tax levy for the library, no matter how good the cause, is unpalatable. As we know, once a tax is levied, it never goes away.

And how much will our school taxes increase next year and the year after? There seems to be no end in sight.
