Columnist misses point on refugees
Nicholas Kristof missed the reason for screening refugees again in his column that appeared in the Nov. 29 Observer-Reporter.
First, it’s not all the Syrian refugees that terrify U.S. politicians. It’s only the ones who pose threats to U.S. citizens that are noteworthy.
Second, I feel sympathy for the plight of Heba, a refugee Kristof described in his column. Kristof has apparently checked her credentials thoroughly enough to allow her to reside in his home. She’s one less refugee who will have to be screened before she enters the United States.
Americans are afraid of terrorists from any source, and President Obama’s plan to admit 10,000 refugees is poorly thought out. Once again, all refugees do not pose a menace to us. Whether the Syrians are more educated than others in the Middle East is irrelevant. Obama and his family are not planning on living in the same neighborhood as some of the 10,000 refugees. That would drive down the value of his property.
Kristof should write fewer columns and get busy helping to reduce the stench of inhumane treatment of helpless refugees.
