I’m confused about John Richman’s recent comments about the parkette located on East Wheeling Street in Washington. He is the owner of the lot, and was with us during the announcement ceremony about the parkette. His generous offer was announced and everyone thanked and congratulated him.

When I read the July 4 Observer-Reporter article about the lot being up for sale, I was convinced it was a mistake. With some convincing, I reluctantly believed it and thought it shameful. Volunteers put so much work into beautifying our city, and this is the result? Many give time and effort to improve the appearance of our downtown. I think it disrespects all the hard work done by the project team and volunteers.

Having grown up elsewhere, I am often baffled when investors don’t want to invest in Washington. I have come to love this city. Each time I have spoken with outside investors, they inform me that Washington has a reputation for being dysfunctional. It does not help when we make national news for saying or doing stupid stuff. Shame on those who perpetuate this image.
