In reference to your May 25 editorial on low voter turnout and independents not being able to vote in primary elections, our primary election system does need to be revamped. Allowing independents to vote and restricting cross-filing for certain offices should increase voter turnout. However, these are not the only solutions. These will not change the apathy of the electorate.

The right and privilege to vote must be taught at home and in our schools. If parents don’t vote, their children follow the same path. The comment that “there’s no one worth voting for” is a feeble excuse. Surely there is a candidate or two on the ballot worth consideration.

Also, there are a number of people who are not even registered to vote. And what about the committee people in our precincts? Shouldn’t they work on encouraging voters to get to the polls?

The system is flawed, but so are the individuals who don’t participate.
