Democrat Matt Smith is resigning from his post as state senator for the 37th Senatorial District, which encompasses most of the South Hills. As a registered Republican in the district, I think it’s time we begin to change the face of our party in Allegheny County.

There has been an undeniable pattern of success recently in the region for Republican female candidates, with state senators Camera Bartolotta and Kim Ward serving as examples. Female candidates have proven to be harder to attack and more dynamic politically. The Republican Committee of Allegheny County has the opportunity to broaden its base by not only putting forth a candidate that reflects the party’s values, but also defies the stereotype the GOP is the party of old white men.

Currently, the Republican Committee of Allegheny County has no female representation in the state House or Senate. It’s time we change that, by diversifying our ranks and nominating a female candidate in the 37th Senatorial District.
