Gov. Tom Wolf’s proposal to increase taxes was to be expected. However, let us not be duped into higher taxes for education with a sales tax increase and the promise of lower property taxes. This is simply a bait-and-switch tactic. In the short term, property taxes will be lowered, but then go right back up to the level they are at now or higher. And, all the while, we will be paying additional sales tax.

We were given the same song and dance routine by the administration of Gov. Ed Rendell when they pushed the gambling initiative through. We all see what that got us – gambling, plus the same or higher property taxes.

The only true reduction in property taxes would be the permanent elimination of property taxes, and their replacement by increased sales and income taxes. This type of taxation would be fair to all and not subject to somebody else’s opinion about what your property is worth.
