Character counts

This seems like an oft-repeated mantra, but as my dad always says, “Character does matter.” At no time has this been more evident than after watching a weekend of political news on television. For example, it was full of politicians not being able to take stands on Israel. This was followed by others who hide their email messages. And, in some cases, these politicians have been around for decades.
However easy it is to blame politicians of either party, we as voters need to accept responsibility for the decisions we make. Candidates, both locally and nationally, exercise bad judgment and in some cases get booted out of office, only to turn up months or several years later running for some other position, as if the reasons we voted them out of office in the first place don’t matter.
I don’t know about you, but I am tired of going into the voting booth and being reminded of Sam Malone’s famous line from “Cheers”: “I’d rather shave my head with a cheese grater while chewing on tin foil” when having to consider my choices and why some of the candidates with the worst character keep running.
We as voters need to have longer memories and elect fresh faces.
