Behavior of supervisors is appalling

As a North Franklin Township resident, I was appalled by our elected board of supervisors’ behavior at the meeting March 10. The news article by Scott Beveridge covered most of what was discussed, but I would like to add some additional facts our township residents should know.
It was sad to hear volunteer firefighter after firefighter argue as to why they deserve the full $40,000 they had been promised last year when the 2015 budget was made. The supervisors cut it to $30,000 after incurring additional unexpected expenses. After the firefighters’ presentations, the supervisors only promised to take a look at it again.
However, what happened next was even more disturbing to me. My husband, Bob Sabot, a former supervisor, made some comments during public participation that were brushed aside rather quickly. He told the supervisors that when he was in office between 1998 and 2004, the fire company received township support of $30,000. Keeping them at that amount in 2015 was ridiculous when you consider the rate of inflation. Also, he pointed out that second-class townships such as North Franklin are required by township code to provide road services and fire protection. He told them that what this comes down to in the budget is a matter of priorities.
However, while he calmly spoke, making his comments as any taxpaying resident is allowed to do, each supervisor interrupted him. It was appalling conduct.
Meanwhile, the township continues to hire police officers and have a half-million dollar budget for them. At the same time, our firefighters must continue to raise more than 85 percent of their budget through bingos, mailings and other fundraisers.
Yes, it is a matter of priorities, and North Franklin supervisors need to look at theirs. In actuality, the fire company should be getting about $60,000 per year and that would still be a bargain.
