We have reduced the advertising of tobacco and a number of lives have been saved by this action. Now, we have the scourge of unprecedented alcohol advertising on television, especially during the coverage of many sporting events. Young people watch these events and the advertising of alcohol is leading them in the wrong direction. Think of the number of alcohol-related deaths among our young people.

Some might say, “We don’t want to lose the benefits we derive from taxes on tobacco and alcohol.” Many are employed in the production and sale of tobacco, and in the production, advertising and sale of alcohol. Does money come before life? We raise money to combat disease, while, at the same time, we promote it. It doesn’t make sense.

Money used to fight substance abuse could be spent on things more worthwhile if man would only abstain. For some, moderation only leads to more and more, then addiction. “Don’t drink and drive” is not enough. We can improve things if we make a real effort.
