Where is the compassion?

I am writing in response to George T. Prevuznik’s appalling letter, “Say no to use of Narcan,” which appeared in the Thursday edition of the Observer-Reporter.

First of all, where is Prevuznik’s humanity and compassion? Heroin addicts are loved by their families and friends, even as they cause them great grief and worry, and are inherently valued and valuable because they are human beings.

Second, how much money is Prevuznik going to save if we allow addicts to die? Many work and have families to support. How much taxpayer money will it take to raise their parentless children?

Third, if we are going to judge where health dollars are spent, do we stop treating drunk drivers who crash their cars? Driving drunk is illegal. Do we not treat a criminal shot by a police officer or victim during the commission of a crime?

A world based on Prevuznik’s utilitarian and heartless principles would be scary indeed. Addicts need treatment and deserve access to it when they are ready for it. Treatment and prevention of this horrible disease and compassion for those afflicted and their families is what’s best socially and economically for our society.
