I was greatly offended by a political cartoon published on Friday depicting Joseph and Mary being turned away from an inn.

When Mary and Joseph came to the inn, they were turned away because there was no room. The reason they were in Bethlehem was to register for the census, according to the Gospel of Luke. They were in their own country and were not strangers or foreigners. The innkeeper was not a Republican or a Democrat. He was a businessman doing his job. If a motel is full, would the owner be condemned if he turned someone away? It has happened to me in my travels.

Joseph and Mary were citizens who registered and paid taxes. To blame the GOP for keeping Mary and Joseph from staying at the inn because they might be terrorists is a low blow. Today, both Republicans and Democrats are concerned about the threat of terrorists, so please get your facts straight before publishing untruth in the Observer-Reporter to try to make a political statement.
