I moved to California from a major city with my husband because we were attracted to the lower cost of living. But living in a university town, we too often see intoxicated students on the weekends, students driving on our street beyond the speed limit, and we’ve heard numerous reports of sexual assault, theft, and drug overdoses at the university.

The recent car accident that killed a 21-year-old university student has compelled me to speak out against these students who think they’re immortal. The young men ejected from the vehicle weren’t wearing seatbelts in a vehicle going too fast. Seatbelts are in cars for a reason, to save lives.

These young people seem to ignore that there are heartbreaking consequences to their reckless behavior. Reckless driving, drug abuse, and physical violence – these can result in young lives being ended too soon. I believe the town needs to do more to enforce law and order to protect university students from future tragedies. Higher fines for not wearing seatbeltx, drug possession, and speeding.

Students must realize being young doesn’t make you invincible.
