Send us your thoughts

Got an opinion you’ve been itching to express? Well, it’s good to get things off your chest. And one way to do that is sending us a letter to the editor.

The letters to the editor that appear on this page, and on our website, are a way you can contribute to the dialogue within Washington and Greene counties. But we do ask those who send us letters to follow certain guidelines.

First, you should include your address and telephone number for verification purposes. And brevity is best – while there is not a specific limit on the number of words, expressing your opinion with concision is highly recommended.

Also, we ask that you refrain from personal attacks. While a public official or candidate for office might get your goat, it steps over the bounds of propriety to attack their character, accuse them of crimes or make other libelous statements. Letters that make broad-brush characterizations about members of religious or ethnic groups will also be rejected.

Your letters should also reflect your thoughts, in your words. Letters that cut and paste material from other sources without attribution will be rejected.

Though the actor Keanu Reeves will never be mistaken for a great philosopher, he got it right when he said the following: “Letters are something from you. It’s a different kind of intention than writing an email.”
