I want to commend you on your Oct. 8 editorial regarding libraries being the centers of our communities.

A group of individuals in Bentleyville is working diligently to enlarge the Bentleyville Public Library and Bentworth Senior Center to also include the Bentleyville Historical Society. We are in full agreement with your statements.

A frequent question we receive is “Why do we need a library?” As you said in the editorial, we are attempting to redefine the building’s purpose in order to make it more user-friendly for the numerous groups that have not had the room in which to have access to all types of learning, social activity and companionship.

The Bentleyville Community Center will do just that for Bentleyville, Cokeburg, Ellsworth, Somerset and North Bethlehem townships. It should not be a building that houses only books and DVDs. We want it to be a place where our residents will be able to have a meeting, being able to access resource material, have classrooms, children’s activities, hold seminars and lectures and be able to learn the history of our area’s past.

We are grateful for the help we have thus far received and look forward to the day when the first shovel of dirt is turned on our new building.
