Donald Trump is no hero
My uncle Paul was one of the strongest and most honorable men I have ever known. He served four years in the South Pacific during World War II. During one battle, his captain was wounded. Though still under fire, Uncle Paul, who was also wounded, ran back to rescue his captain and carried him to safety. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Silver Star for his bravery.
Uncle Paul was a hero.
During the Vietnam War, Sen. John McCain was captured when his plane crashed. He was a prisoner of war for five years and endured near-constant torture by his captors, including brutal beatings and solitary confinement. He survived the ordeal, but suffered permanent physical limitations. He received a Silver Star, a Purple Heart and a number of other military honors.
Sen. John McCain is a hero.
To hear Donald Trump say that McCain is not a hero because he was captured, it makes you wonder if he would like to do away with awarding Purple Hearts altogether.
Just recently, a misguided veteran gave Trump the Purple Heart he had been awarded. Trump was quite pleased, saying that getting one that way was much easier. Indeed, meaninglessly easy. Surely Trump is aware that valor and honor are not transferable qualities. Trump should have thanked the veteran, but refused to accept a medal he did not earn. A Purple Heart was a kind of trophy he always wanted, but did nothing to deserve. By accepting the medal, Trump devalued and disrespcted all servicemen and servicewomen who actually earned one.
Trump avoided service in Vietnam by receiving five deferments. He is definitely not a hero.
Having never served in the military, much less experienced combat, it may explain his insensitivity and ignorance regarding those who have suffered and died for their country.
