Keeping track of riots
It’s really getting hard to keep track of all these riots without a scorecard. I’m writing this as Milwaukee is the latest American city to go up in flames.
The racially-fueled infernos erupt seemingly on a weekly basis on our streets after African Americans are shot by police, sometimes fatally. In some cases, the victims were not armed. In South Carolina, he was running and was shot in the back. In Louisiana, a suspect was killed as he lay flat on his belly. In Minnesota, a man lost his life as he reached into his pocket for his identification, as he announced to the cop he was doing so.
After a man was shot while lying on his back with his arms outstretched, there were no riots, perhaps only because he survived. I don’t have my scorecard handy, so I can’t tell you where that one happened.
Even the Israelis and Palestinians, who have been engaged in countless deadly skirmishes through the years, must be shaking their heads in disbelief. Nearly 40 years ago, President Jimmy Carter helped negotiate a Middle East peace agreement. Who will negotiate ours?
