Trinity used creativity to finance project
I applaud the Trinity School Board for its creative way to finance a major capital improvement project.
I see the parents’ side, that going from $35 per year to park at Trinity High School to $200 per year is a very steep increase. Maybe a more moderate increase to $100 would have been better, but according to Superintendent Michael Lucas, the increase will go toward adding to student parking, not staff parking or any other capital expenditures, and to make parking at the high school safe for all involved.
Student parking at the high school is a privilege and not a requirement. For the staff, administrators and teachers in the school district, it is a necessity to park at the school. Many of the staff live outside the school district, and do not have access to public transportation to the school, whereas the students can ride a bus. And the district is paying $3 million a year to provide this safe and efficient transportation.
Unless a student has a job that is necessary to help support a family, they don’t need to park at the school. As for extracurricular activities, driving is a convenience but not a necessity.
While 436 people signed a petition to have the school board lower the price of a parking permit, most of the 150 spaces have been taken. So, if I’m on the school board, I would ignore the petition, because the goal of the cost increase has been achieved.
