A late-night repair
Your Aug. 21 editorial on the safety of amusement park rides reminded me of a time in the 1980s when my wife’s friend called one evening after supper to ask if I could fix a carousel for him. He was an amusement ride inspector and the ride was to open the next morning at 9 a.m.
He said he had the parts for the proper start/stop circuit, but didn’t know how to correctly wire the parts in.
Well, we took off for Pittsburgh and I installed the proper circuit. Sometime after midnight, we were riding a safe carousel.
As your editorial pointed out, how many inspectors permitted that ride to operate with an unsafe design? How many years? Was anyone injured because of that?
