Good news in the Mon Valley

The Observer-Reporter printed front page news that is actually good news for a change. I refer to the article about consolidating services in five communities in the Mon Valley. The good news is that some people in that area have some good sense. They are talking about sharing street repair and maintenance services, just as they have been sharing policing duties.

But, as always, bad news lurks. And in this case it’s “no news is bad news.” Canonsburg sits cheek by jowl to Houston. But they both have their own municipal services. East Washington still maintains its own police department. A visitor to our area driving out Beau Street would never know they had suddenly left Washington and entered East Washington.

Why are commonsense measures like consolidating services so hard to achieve in this area?
