Gas tax is too high

The 2015 Pennsylvania gasoline tax was the highest of any state at 51.6 cents per gallon. This compares to Alaska, the nation’s lowest, at just 12.2 cents per gallon. When gasoline is priced at about $2 per gallon, we are paying approximately 25 percent in state tax for each gallon.

Compare that to paying a 6 percent sales tax. Every time we pay a sales tax, it is on our receipt, it is in plain sight for everyone to see. If we saw a 25 percent tax on our receipts when we paid at the pump, that would raise some eyebrows. We are bringing in huge amounts of tax dollars. We have an efficiency problem, we have an accountability problem and certainly we have a big-time spending problem.
