Not a word was spoken

For years, I rode the Pittsburgh Light Rail train – the T – through the South Hills and into work in Pittsburgh.

Back then, people would converse with one another. According to my recollection, anyone could jump into a conversation. By today’s standards, that kind of interaction has been reduced dramatically.

Based upon a recent experience, face-to-face interaction has been eliminated completely.

I caught the 7 a.m. trolley to downtown Pittsburgh for an early appointment.

Within a few stops, it was at standing-room-only status.

From my observation, only one passenger was reading a newspaper, while everyone else was studying a handheld device. Not a word was spoken.

It was a very strange encounter.
