Those wishing to succeed in business will do so by following this advice: Find something people need, then sell it to them.

That axiom explains the spirit of enterprise, and photos in this newspaper of 9-year-old Chevelle Chase operating her lemonade stand in East Washington earlier this week are a clear and simple example of that spirit. It’s hot and humid, and there’s profit to be made in filling the need for refreshment.

Long ago, when kids sold lemonade on street corners for a nickel or a dime – not the half a buck (still reasonable) charged by Chevelle – that enterprising spirit was more prevalent. Youngsters delivered newspapers then. They earned money shoveling snow from walks and driveways in their neighborhood and by raking leaves and mowing lawns.

We don’t see that much anymore. Times changed. Kids have other things to do.

That may not be all bad, but we have to wonder if somewhere along the way the work ethic was lost and what consequences may await us.

And that’s why seeing Chevelle’s lemonade stand is refreshing, in more ways than one.
