A county directory needed

I hope Observer-Reporter readers enjoyed the June 5 article on Washington & Jefferson College’s arboretum. Even though the story was about trees, it shed light on a beautiful college that never seems to make much news in the Observer-Reporter. W&J has a lot of new buildings and you never hear bad reports about the professors or students. The students seem so well-mannered when they are walking on the grounds. There is no profanity or roughness as motorists pass. Many other colleges have a reputation for drinking and fighting.

Nothing would be nicer than to get the community more engaged with this college and help promote it like we are proud of it. It is known to be a great college, but city and county residents do not seem like they even know it exists.

Another area of the county that stays too quiet most of the year is the Washington County Fairgrounds. With all the updated buildings and grounds, there should be a lot of activities.

While much advertising is done in the Observer-Reporter to alert residents of certain activities, it would be an added help if Washington County developed a directory like the one issued by Allegheny County that covers everything from schools, physicians, utilities, malls, eateries and more. Many in Washington County have no knowledge what to do if there is an emergency, like a terrific storm, a huge fire or an explosion. Such information should be sitting on all our nightstands.

People with problems need directions; people feeling lonely and lost need suggestions.
