Last week, the city of Washington celebrated the opening of the 13th season of the Main Street Farmers Market and, more importantly, the first season of the new Main Street Farmers Market Pavilion.

The new covered pavilion will allow customers of the popular farmers market the opportunity to shop for farm fresh produce and unique offerings regardless of the elements and in an attractive environment in the heart of downtown Washington. The pavilion will also provide a home for cultural, tourism and community activities, such as the Washington Symphony Orchestra, Washington Festival Chorale and Whiskey Rebellion Festival. It also has the potential to become the city’s “Town Square” and a center for civic activities – drawing new visitors and customers to the area.

The Main Street Farmers Market Pavilion is the culmination of years of planning, advocacy and dedication by the Farmers Market Board of Directors and countless community volunteers who created partnerships to build this new community asset in downtown. Through their efforts, they attracted support and significant funding from the Washington County Local Share Account, Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency, Washington & Jefferson College, Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington, local companies, foundations and private individuals – all who shared their vision and commitment to investing in the Farmers Market and downtown.

The new Main Street Farmers Market Pavilion is a momentous accomplishment for the city of Washington and it stands as a milestone for the continued revitalization of our county seat and a testament to working together for a common community good.
