Cancel your paper and we all lose
Many letters have disagreed with the Observer-Reporter’s Nov. 10 editorial, “Trump wins.” That is why the First Amendment is so important.
Should we always agree with all that is printed, said, broadcast or sent electronically? President-elect Donald Trump has vilified reporters from all media outlets. Why? Because he, like the letter writers, disagrees with them. Canceling a subscription for disagreeing with an editorial is exactly how our free press will cease to be. Instead of canceling your subscription, you should rejoice in differences. The Observer-Reporter published letters which had many folks shaking their heads in affirmation, but were probably not good news for the newspaper’s circulation department.
Some say say the Observer-Reporter loses. I disagree. America loses.
So where will you get your daily news and information? Will you only read things you agree with, talk to like-minded people, or watch one news channel?
When enough people harass the messengers or cancel their newspaper subscriptions because of disagreements, we will lose one of our greatest strengths as a country. America as we know it will cease to exist. Cancel if you must. But know one fact – when American newspapers and their writers diminish or even disappear, that is when all of us will say to those in power, “We have no words.”
