Rodents are also mammals

I was astonished to read, twice, in the front-page article Thursday about Fort Cherry High School’s problem with shrews “causing a stink” that “shrews are mammals, not rodents.” Sorry, but shrews are mammals, yes, but so are rodents. And so are man and elephants. And whales and porpoises, too.

Shrews share all the characteristics that are included in the “class” of mammals, although most are classified in different families of mammals (They breathe air, for example, and they bear live young).

The final sentence of the article mentioned it was a “good science lesson.” I suspect a number of Fort Cherry students already clarified to the superintendent and others involved that shrews and rodents are both mammals!
