Trump is trying to protect us

In reading the letter to the editor by Oren Spiegler, “No longer welcoming the stranger,” in the Aug. 8 edition of the Observer-Reporter, I found it to be quite misleading and definitely slanted. As I have read some of Spiegler’s previous letters, it seems to me he has a great dislike for our president, who is simply trying to protect us.

As for the immigration policy the president wants, which would restrict immigration, it’s really going back where it was years ago. We never had open gates. There was a quota. There were no handouts of any kind at the turn of the last century.

I’m a first-generation American. My uncle came to America first. He had a sponsor and a job to go to. When he got established, he sent for his brother (my father). They wanted us to speak only English and they referred to their motherland as the “old country.”

As for the Holocaust, Spiegler may not know, but at the start of World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt could have saved millions of Jews. When a ship loaded with Jewish refugees came to us, the ship was denied entry. Perhaps Spiegler needs to look up some history before he condemns the president.

We do need borders to protect us. I assume Spiegler owns a home. How would he like people walking through his property. Would he not put up a fence? Would he leave his front door open, let them all in and taken care of them?
