School is in session, so drivers should be careful on area roads

If you ever come across anyone who says, “Y’know, I just think summer creeps by too slowly,” notify the authorities. They are as rare as a Northern hairy-nosed wombat, the red-crested tree rat, the spoon-billed sandpiper and other critters that nature-watchers rarely come across.

And even though it seemed that back-to-school ads started to turn up even before the engines on school buses had a chance to cool, students in the region are either back in class or will be soon. The calendar says summer will officially come to a close on Sept. 22, but once children are back at their desks and picking up where they left off in June, summer and its lazy, hazy days are pretty much at an end.

That means it’s incumbent on drivers to exercise caution when they are on their way to work on weekday mornings and when school is dismissed in the afternoon.

Buses will be out on the roads and highways, and that means drivers should stop when those buses are picking up or dropping off students.

They also need to be on the lookout for students darting into the street, or riding their bikes to school. Sometimes young people aren’t accompanied by parents in their travels, and lack the knowledge or patience to look both ways.

Drivers in Waynesburg, Washington and California also have to be watchful for students attending Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and California University of Pennsylvania. Students at those institutions are adults, and should be treated as such, but caution should still be exercised.

Even if they don’t have children in school, or it’s been years since they have, drivers can do their part to make sure everyone has a safe school year.
