That Santa Claus. He sure is a busy fellow.

Walk into any shopping center and he’s there. He drops by all kinds of parties and assorted other events this time of year, all while showing no signs of fatigue and maintaining a jolly demeanor. It’s all the more impressive when you take his white beard and girth into account; though his age has never been disclosed, Santa is clearly closer to retirement age than he is to high school graduation. He looks like a fellow who would relish a long winter’s nap.

The highest-profile resident of the North Pole will be quite visible throughout Washington and Greene counties this weekend. He will be at Washington’s Holiday Market Friday starting at 3 p.m., where, as the Observer-Reporter’s Katie Anderson reported, he’ll be “checking his lists twice and taking toy requests.” It will be at the Community Pavilion on South Main Street and will have music, food and 13 craft vendors. The Holiday Market will serve as the prelude to Washington’s annual Christmas Parade, which will start at Chestnut Street and travel south on Main Street.

Also today, the Christmas tree on the steps of the Greene County Courthouse will be illuminated, while businesses along Waynesburg’s High Street will have extended hours.

Yep, Santa will be there, too. Downtown Waynesburg’s Christmas parade is happening at 2 p.m. Saturday. Sponsored by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce, it will have 82 floats, antique cars, dancers and more.

On Saturday, Claysville will have a Christmas parade starting at 6 p.m., where Santa will again be making an appearance atop a fire engine. It will start in the Claysville Elementary School parking lot and continue on Route 40.

Sure, we’re all busy this time of year, but these events are excellent opportunities to support local businesses and see friends and neighbors.
