LETTER This is our president
While defending President Trump’s retweeting of a British fringe group’s anti-Muslim videos, “White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump was simply promoting border security and suggested that verifying the content was not a top concern,” according to an article that appeared in the Nov. 30 Observer-Reporter.
“‘Whether it’s a real video, the threat is real and that is what the president is talking about,’ she said.”
Think about that for a minute. Trump has the most elaborate fact-checking operation in the world at his fingertips. Or, he could have called British Prime Minister Theresa May and asked about the tweets from the group, and learned that it was a far-right group that seeks to divide through its use of “hateful narratives which peddle lies and stoke tensions,” according to a May spokesman.
What our president chose to do, however, was retweet the lies without even checking, and thereby heighten racial and religious tensions around the world, cause problems for our closest ally, give priceless, worldwide publicity to an obscure hate group, and garner a shout-out from the KKK. And have his spokeswoman openly claim the actual truth doesn’t matter!
This is our president, folks. His finger is on the nuclear button. God help us all.
