Renters pay property taxes

Yet again a letter has been written to the Observer-Reporter that erroneously states that renters do not pay property taxes.

For many years I owned a home, and enjoyed the ability to deduct property taxes from my income tax. Now I am a renter. My landlord pays property taxes on the apartment. Part of every month’s rent covers this cost to my landlord.

The only difference between me and the homeowner is that he or she receives a tax benefit, and I do not.
