YMCA would be a welcome addition
Apparently some on the North Strabane Township Board of Supervisors are confused about the nature and purpose of the YMCA. I understand the concept of not wanting to use public funds to help finance “private enterprise,” which by definition is a business owned by individuals for the purpose of making a profit.
The YMCA is a nonprofit organization that has been in existence for 173 years for the purpose of engaging communities in three areas: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. I would have thought that it was obvious that such an organization would be a welcome addition to any community and deserved the support of the local governing body and residents.
Helping to finance the construction of a YMCA in North Strabane Township with gaming revenue for the benefit of all in the community is exactly the sort of expenditure that should be encouraged.
