Issues with the county PONY team
Recent performances by the Washington County PONY All-Star Team raises some interesting questions.
There are 15 school districts in Washington County but only three are represented on Washington County All-Star Team: Washington, Trinity and Canonsburg. It might be interesting to learn how many of the players are either sons, relatives or close friends of the coaches who make up the team.
The word county seems to include all of Washington County but excludes 12 other districts. Does this mean that none of the 12 other districts can provide athletes sufficiently competitive to play on a county all-star team? This is unlikely. If the All-Stars’ record is a reliable barometer of how many championships were won over the last six decades. If the word county is to be used, should not the best of the 15 school districts be represented.
Last week in a PONY tournament at Washington Park with 10 teams entered, the Washington County All-Star Team was defeated by a team made up of seven McGuffey and one Chartiers-Houston player, 11-0, in pool play and 10-6 in the championship round.

Editor’s note: Per PONY Baseball’s boundary rules, currently, only players from Trinity, Washington and Canonsburg who played in the Founder’s League are eligible to make the host area’s PONY World Series team.
