Baseball team made college, community proud
I am only a fan of Washington & Jefferson College’s sports programs – I’m not an alumnus – but I wish to express my most sincere appreciation for the thrills the baseball team gave to me this spring.
Their victories in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, and the regional tournament held at Ross Memorial Park, gave the team’s families and fans great hope for a national title in NCAA Division III. Although the team made a fine showing in the championship tournament in Appleton, Wisc., the “agony of defeat” befell them as they fell short of their final goal.
In retrospect, this season’s record is outstanding, and two trophies will reside in W&J’s Hall of Fame at Cameron Stadium. With 12 graduating seniors on the squad, coach Jeff Mountain will have a “mountain” to climb as he assembles the 2018 team.
As is usually the case, after the team holds its final farewell meeting, it’s unlikely they will assemble again with everyone present who made the trip to the national tournament. Time and distance most likely will take their toll on reunions these men will attempt to organize. As time passes, the sting of the experience will lessen, while the feelings of lifelong friendships will endure.
The team and the coach made W&J and Washington County proud.
