Article stirred memories

Your March 20 front-page article about Ann Rowe Hupp and Madonna of the Trail statue brought back memories of my mother, Mary Marland Myers. My mother told my sister and me about the Pioneer Woman statue that her cousin, E.W. Marland, had created, and which now stands in Ponca City, Okla.

In the early 1920s, Marland asked sculptors to provide miniature sculptures in a competition depicting a pioneer woman. The sculptures were displayed in various cities across the United States. The winner of the competition was Bryant Baker. A bronze statue 17-feet tall was made and dedicated in April 1930, with an address offered by President Herbert Hoover. Many other celebrities were also present.

The articles on local history are very important and remind us of the past.
