Lunch policy shows compassion, responsibility

As a lifelong resident of Canonsburg, I grew up knowing what it means to live in a community of people who look out for each other. Though our small town has grown significantly in recent years, I am heartened to see those basic values remain intact.
The Canon-McMillan School District’s decision to revise its lunch policy, ensuring that no child is singled out for an unpaid lunch account, reflects the community’s strong sense of compassion and responsibility toward all its residents. It gives every child access to the same meal while protecting their privacy.
We have become the first school district in the state to adopt such a policy, and sincerely hope for the passage of state and federal legislation that would establish the same standards for all.
Our much-criticized previous policy was enacted in response to a federal mandate. In our community, when we recognize a mistake – even one we did not initiate – we take action to correct it, because the well-being of our students will always be our top priority. We hope this philosophy sets an example, both for other districts and for the children we serve.
