Loyal opposition is now the enemy

Throughout my 25-plus years as a pastor of “liberal” mainline Protestant churches, I have considered the “Christian right” the loyal opposition. No more. I don’t recognize those who embrace “Trumpism.” That would be Trump’s agenda.

Our disagreements over the war in Vietnam, civil rights, abortion and gay relationships – to name a few – seem quaint compared to the vitriolic words aimed at nonwhites, immigrants and proponents of gun regulation. Once the opposition, it seems those on the opposite side of my liberal mainline “tribe” are now the enemy.

Jesus preached a gospel of equality, forgiveness (for those who repent) and openness to people from all races and even other faiths. For me, a church is defined by who is included. Others define their church by who is excluded: gays, nonwhites, immigrants, etc.

Several explanations for the right wing going beyond the pale revolve around appointing judges who oppose abortion or supporting the idea that America is a Christian nation (other faiths not welcome), in juxtaposition to Lady Liberty’s vow. I fear an even darker reason. Though Jesus taught love, he gives them permission to hate.

Finally, there is the matter of character and integrity. Integrity means to be at one with yourself. Your life reflects your words. After Bill Clinton was nearly hounded out of office, Trump is getting a “mulligan” for his amoral behavior.

Immoral describes someone who chooses to do the wrong thing. Amoral means having no sense of right or wrong. Sanctimonious, salacious and scornful, Trump is their sacred savior.
