LETTER: Make a big lie and repeat it
Make a big lie and repeat it
President Trump is creating his own “kingdom” of lies much like Josef Goebbels did. Goebbels was the Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany who wrote: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”
Trump’s lies meet the above criteria to a T: The press is the enemy of the people, Mueller is running a witch hunt, U.S. Steel is opening seven new plants and on and on. More egregious than Trump’s lies is the complicity of congressional Republicans. During the campaign Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Paul Ryan and others were hypercritical of Trump and declared him to be a liar and manipulator and unfit for the office. Compare their words then to their stark silence today. With the exception of Charlie Dent, where are the voices of Sen. Pat Toomey and other Republicans? The least they can do is to remind Trump of the eighth commandment: “Thou shall not lie.”
PT Barnum was good at manipulating people. His American Museum was so popular that visitors would spend too much time there. It cut into his profits. So he put up a sign above a door that read: This way to the EGRESS. All flocked to the egress, thinking it was some exotic exhibit, only to learn there was nothing there (but the exit!) and they could not get back in unless they paid again. Trump has a big sign that reads: “This way to the PRECIPICE,” and his faithful blindly follow.
This “wreck of a man” (as George F. Will aptly describes him) will unravel, and when he does, he will be totally unrecognizable. He will look like Pinocchio’s twin brother.
