LETTER Words matter, Mr. President

Which is it, Mr. President?

You tell us in eloquent words after the latest gun massacre, this time at a newspaper, that “This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief,” that “journalists, like all Americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their job.”

Previously, you have attacked members of the media, referring to them as “absolute scum,” “very dishonest,” “disgusting” and “the enemies of the people.” You stated that you would look into “opening up” libel law to enable you to pursue those who wrote material that does not favor you. You tweeted a video of you wrestling CNN to the ground, and you have led your mobs of supporters at emotionally charged campaign rallies in chants of “CNN Sucks.”

Do you recognize that the words of a president may have consequences, that when you use the bully pulpit to savage those who are doing honorable work which helps to keep us free, you may aid and abet a sick mind?

As usual, this president talks out of both sides of his mouth.
