Find out more about Alzheimer’s disease
June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. Uncover the truth about Alzheimer’s and take action at alz.org/abam.
Truth: According to a former surgeon general, “Alzheimer’s is the most under-recognized threat to public health in this century.” Alzheimer’s disease has no cure, and there are currently no survivors. Over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, with 400,000 Pennsylvanians currently diagnosed. Their friends and family put in over 18.4 billion hours of unpaid labor each year as caregivers. This disease has a wide-reaching impact on the American family at all stages. An estimated 250,000 children provide help to someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
As a disease with no cure, Alzheimer’s is in need of a coordinated research and education effort. Information is the key to finding the first survivor of Alzheimer’s. The bipartisan Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure Act (H.R. 4256) is a step forward for Alzheimer’s awareness, early detection, and data collection. This bill also assists states that are working to reduce avoidable hospitalizations and works toward ensuring underprivileged individuals have access to effective Alzheimer’s interventions
We thank Congressman Doyle for his sponsorship of the BOLD Act and ask Congressman Lamb to cosponsor the BOLD Act. His support would assist the United States in finding a cure to Alzheimer’s.
