Columnist was right about flooding
I wholeheartedly agree with George Block about the connection between the excessive flooding in our area and the destruction of trees (“When water rises, look upstream and remember the thirsty trees,” March 4). Whether you’re talking about Cecil Township, North Strabane or Peters Township, you see nothing but man’s war against Mother Nature: rampant development with no care for future consequences. In his letter to the editor Sunday, Joseph McLaughlin mentioned destroyed trees being replaced, but I fail to see where these trees of which he speaks are anywhere in these communities. And, if some are planting trees to replace those destroyed, it takes years for a young tree to grow into a mature thing of beauty. What holds back the water in the meantime?
What makes the excessive development worse is the fact that some of the developers don’t even live here. They destroy wildlife habitat, throw up houses of questionable value and workmanship, take their money and run back home to their mansions with acres of land. How sad that those of us remaining must deal with Mother Nature’s answer to this wanton lack of responsibility.
