LETTER If Trump is worthy of Nobel, so be it
Amidst Donald Trump’s laughable and pompous suggestion that “everyone is talking about” how he should be afforded the Nobel Peace Prize, this is a moment to celebrate as three detainees/hostages have been returned to the United States in an extraordinary goodwill gesture on the part of Kim Jong Un in advance of talks between the two leaders. To the extent that Trump was responsible for this, if any, he deserves praise.
Anything can happen in the upcoming meeting between Kim Jong Un and Trump. Let us hope that the president will listen to and heed knowledgeable and sane advisors and conduct himself appropriately, reaching a verifiable agreement if it is possible and not giving away the store if his Achilles’ heel is activated, the provision of praise and flattery from our adversary.
The prospect of the most incendiary, divisive, intolerant, coarse, crude and hateful president of history receiving a distinguished honor for bringing about peace is distasteful, but if he is able to reach a historic breakthrough with North Korea that does not jeopardize the United States, the bestowing of it upon Trump is something that could be accepted.
