EDITORIAL: In newly drawn congressional district, we endorse Reschenthaler
It’s no wonder if some residents of Washington and Greene counties are confused about who their representative is in Congress right now.
First, longtime U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy resigned in October 2017 as a result of a scandal blending marital infidelity, hypocrisy and mistreatment of employees. Then, in the midst of the special election to fill out the remainder of his term, the commonwealth’s congressional map was redrawn after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court declared the previous configuration was designed to entrench Republicans in power. As a result, the eventual winner of the special election, Democrat Conor Lamb, opted to go after a seat that stretches from his Mt. Lebanon home into Beaver County. This means when January dawns, the area will have yet another new representative in Congress.
The contest for the 14th congressional district, which also includes all of Fayette County and part of Westmoreland County, has pitted two candidates of substance and accomplishment against one another. Democrat Bibiana Boerio has a resume that includes work as a managing director for Jaguar Cars, a chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak and interim president of Seton Hill College in 2013 and 2014. Her opponent, Republican Guy Reschenthaler, has served in the Pennsylvania Senate since 2015, has been a magistrate, and was part of the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps while serving in Iraq.
Given his legislative experience and his service to our country, it’s clear that Reschenthaler is the best choice for the 14th congressional district.
Reschenthaler’s experience as an elected official would make his transition to the bigger stage of Washington, D.C., relatively easy. As a state senator, he has worked to prevent cyberbullying and has been able to work with colleagues across the aisle. He has also been an advocate for programs designed to prevent truancy. In these fractious times, we hope Reschenthaler will bring that spirit of comity to Washington, D.C.
It’s clear to us that Reschenthaler is the best choice for the 14th congressional district.
