LETTER: Parents, be responsible

Sadly, we hear about those in positions of authority who are abusing and covering up abuses. Worse, this is nothing new. I grew up during a time when we were taught to accept authority figures and whatever punishments they meted out, be they physical, verbal or mental. As children, we were taught that questioning was wrong.

As parents, my husband and I raised our children with respect. This did not spoil them. It taught them that those in authority can and should listen, and they should listen as well. We, to this day, enjoy communications with our grown children. We taught them to respect themselves and others and the property of others.

How hard is it to put down your devices or leave them at home? Try it and have an actual conversation at dinner. Don’t blame your children for burying themselves in their phones and on social media. Do they see you do it? Stop teaching your children the wrong things. Are you teaching your children that everyone is offending someone constantly? You cannot say a word without someone being offended. Are you teaching your children that they are entitled without actually working for something?

Yes, I was picked on, bullied, verbally abused. This was not just in childhood. It was in the work place where co-workers, managers and supervisors tried intimidation tactics. I wish I had respected myself enough to confront these people. Yes, take care of yourself and tell your children that they can, too.

Parents, teach your children. Listen to them, help them understand what respect is, and take responsibility yourselves. Stop blaming everyone else, but do bring people to justice for hurting yourselves and others. Show your children the right way to help themselves and others. Start at home. We don’t live in those old days anymore. Open those closed doors (what happens behind them). Say, “I’m sorry, I was wrong.” Admit you aren’t perfect; give the example to live by. Parents, be responsible.
