LETTER: James op-ed on target

I agree with Kent James’ op-ed piece Sunday, “Winning ways: Capitalism has a problem with creating wealth inequality.” I hope all politicians read it. Capitalism is the best system we have, but the inequalities it creates can bring down the whole system.

I am very concerned about small business being able to survive competing against monopolies. I am not sure what happened to the monopoly laws. I think the small business that was the backbone of America is being squashed. The inequality we now have in society is worse than the gilded age. The problem of people of low income is that they cannot generate any surplus of income. It makes it very hard for them to get ahead.

Perhaps we could have micro loans from banks that were backed by the government to help people get a chance to be more a part of the economy. I think all anybody wants is a chance to live a good life. If you are a winner and have a great income, good for you. But as a person with morals or religious convictions knows, we all have an obligation to help people pick themselves up to have a better life!
