LETTER: Bipartisan support of puppy mill law needed

U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-14th District) has sponsored a bill prohibiting the sale of animals from puppy mills nationally, which will make the puppy market “more humane.” It would require pet stores to obtain animals from shelters and rescues instead of puppy mills. Consequently, this bill would kill the market and the sickening trade in puppy mills.

Only three states have more puppy mills than Pennsylvania. These large-scale breeding operations provide pet stores with puppies to sell at a mark-up to consumers. Many animals are inbred or have genetic conditions passed onto their offspring, and new owners aren’t aware of this. This bill protects consumers and our furry friends.

Given some horrendous cases of animal abuse that we’ve recently seen, including the raid of 108 unrestrained dogs in Washington County, this is a necessary measure that both Republicans and Democrats should support for man’s best friend.
